Srinagar, Oct 25 (KNO): Srinagar’s streets came alive with runners on Sunday morning as Chief Minister Omar Abdullah flagged off the Kashmir International Marathon, with around 2,000 participants, including 73 foreign athletes from 12 countries. The 42.195-kilometre full marathon was flagged off at 6:30 am, with participants embarking on a route showcasing Srinagar’s scenic beauty. The 21-kilometre half marathon is scheduled to be flagged off at 7:45 am. Among the international participants was Kenya’s Amin Tanchero, who said he hoped to improve his performance in the race. “I hope for the best today. I want to improve my performance,” Tanchero told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) ahead of the race. Asked whether he was aiming for the top spot, Tanchero said he was ready and would pray for the best. Anil Kumar, a participant from Delhi, said he was taking part in the marathon for the second time, bringing with him his previous experience and enthusiasm. The event has attracted runners from across India and abroad, further highlighting Kashmir’s growing profile as a destination for major sporting events. The marathon routes pass through prominent locations, including Dal Lake, Boulevard Road and Nishat Garden, offering participants an opportunity to experience the Valley’s natural beauty while competing. Organisers said 1,807 runners registered online, including 1,221 locals, 513 participants from outside J&K and 73 foreign athletes from 12 countries. Of them, 1,416 registered for the 21-km half marathon and 391 for the 42.195-km full marathon.—(KNO)
